WHAT IS ATLANTEA?

Atlantea is an initiative from professors at the University of Puerto Rico who in solidarity, volunteer to collaborate with each other with the purpose of enriching their daily academic experience and that of their colleagues. They are able to achieve this by promoting one-on-one academic exchanges with colleagues in the Caribbean region. These lia is ons have allowed for the maximization of the professional and productive potential of all people involved.

Atlantea promotes collaborative work among professors, researchers, students and non-academic collaborators. Its purpose is to enrich academic life out of liasions and academic exchanges that daily take place in our university system by making sure that either visiting colleagues or our own academic staff who visits other countries, promote their work and interact with as many people as pos s ible. In this way, we can multiply the specific gains of their participation in academic events.

Altantea ´s purpose is to motivate and promote creativity that is achieved in collective work. Atlantea only promotes exchange s. The people involved are solely respons i b le for creating links and making them happen is.

Finally, Atlantea is an initiative that aims to promote a larger academic presence and influence from the University of Puerto Rico in the region and to make sure that students and professors in the Caribbean know our university system. That´s what Atlantea is all about : to make these expectations a reality and maintain the capacity of recreating a University that has a direct and positive impact in the future of our people and our region.

ABOUT THE NAME, ATLANTEA

The name of the Atlantea Project is symbolic, for it represents the theory of the geological brotherhood of the Antilles and contemplates the meaning of the concept, “we are one”. In short, it is both a simple and complex theory about Puerto Ricans being part of the Caribbean region.

Atlantea is an antique and endemic species of butterfl ies from the Greater Antilles. Each island of the Antilles is home to a different Atlantea species: Cuba , Atlantea Perezi, Jamaica , Atlantea Pantoni, t he Hispa ni ola , Atlantea Cryptalia and Puerto Rico , Atlantea Tulita. This congruence in the distribution by species supports its common origin.

The Project pretends to bind the Caribbean islands in a sisterhood amongst themselves and with the rest of the countries in the Caribbean Basin , giving form to a broad research agenda and of academic lia is ons and exchange s .

ATLANTEA ´S VALUES

Atlantea´s values are framed in the solidarity that is often characteristic of one-to-one academic liasions. These grow out of the positive energy generated in a professional friendship. Among the values Atlantea promotes are:

1. Solidarity:
Atlantea promotes the sharing of ideas, contacts, materials, time and opportunities in a volunteer and fluid way. In this way, we encourage that our faculty help each other in their development process.

2. UPR Systemic Collaboration:
Atlantea promotes that our academic staff collaborate in multi-unit academic projects, helping in this way to expand contacts among professors from the eleven academic units of the university system.

3. Interdisciplinarity:
Atlantea promotes projects that have been coordinated by colleagues from different disciplines, so as to assure that one same subject is studied from different perspectives. This is a way to enrich the nature of research work.

4. The work between mentor and student:
Atlantea promotes that professors and students work in collaborative projects. This practice enriches teaching and breaks with traditional pedagogical styles.

5. A collective and comparative perspective:
Atlantea promotes collective work with a comparative perspective. This has proven to be enriching, not only from the human perspective but also in the professional realm.

6. Inter-institutional and matching funds :
Atlantea promotes matching of funds to finance activities. This has proven to be more efficient in raising investment in the exchanges.

7. Caribbean Promotion:
Atlantea believes that the Caribbean as a region has much to offer to the arts, sciences, and global culture. The promotion and coordination of exchanges that Atlantea carries out seeks to recognize the Caribbean and secure the presence of its researchers and representatives in academic forums.
